Junior Varsity Game Recaps

May 7, 2008

Claremont 10, Los Osos 3 (CHS record: 17-7, 10-5)

Claremont High's junior varsity baseball team beat Los Osos, 10-3, Wednesday at Los Osos and claimed the Baseline League championship. At least, unofficially, that is.

The win gave the Wolfpack a 10-5 league record (17-7 overall), which is reportedly good enough for first place. However, since league standings are not posted at the freshman and JV levels, the championship has yet to be confirmed.

The Pack wrapped up its 2008 JV campaign by exploding for seven runs in the fourth inning and three more in the seventh to knock off the Grizzlies. Seven players had one hit each in the team's seven-hit attack, including freshman Grant Melker, who reached base 14 consecutive times to close out the season. He played most of the year with the freshman team before being promoted to junior varsity two weeks ago.

Down 2-0, Claremont put seven runs on the board in the fourth. Michael Brooks singled, and with one out, Dylan Betancourt and Melker walked to load the bases. Joey Inglese hit one off the hands to right for a hit to score Brooks. Jake Hellein bounded a seeing-eye single up the middle to drive in Betancourt and Melker. James Brooks had a pop-fly single to center to knock home Inglese, and Hellein came home on a wild pitch. Trent Woodward was hit by a pitch, and Woody Cash followed with the only hard-hit ball of the inning, a double to left that scored James Brooks and Woodward.

In the seventh, Betancourt walked and Melker singled of the pitcher's leg. Inglese walked to load the bases, and Craig Brown's ground out scored Betancourt. Woodward doubled to right center to drive in Melker and Inglese.

Mark Landgreen pitched five innings and gave up two runs (one earned) on six hits, while walking one and striking out four. Taylor Meyer followed with two innings in relief, surrendering one run on three hits.

Claremont 8, Los Osos 4 (CHS record: 16-7, 9-5)

The Wolfpack junior varsity scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to break open a 4-4 tie and went on to beat Los Osos, 8-4 Monday at the Wolf Den.

Jake Hellein came on in relief of Dylan Betancourt and gave up just one run and two hits over the final four innings to get the win.

Claremont struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. James Brooks singles and moved to second on Trent Woodward's sacrifice. Michael Brooks then singled in his brother to get the Pack on the board.

After the Grizzlies went ahead with two runs in the top of the second, Claremont responded with two runs of its own. Grant Melker hit a one-out double down the first base line, and Joey Inglese singled him to third. Andrew Martinez walked to load the bases. James Brooks then hit a grounder to second, but a bad throw allowed Melker and Inglese to score.

An inning later, the Wolfpack added another run when Melker singled home Michael Brooks.

The big inning came in the fifth for Claremont. Singles by Woodward and Michael Brooks and a walk to Jake Rangel loaded the bases. With two out, Melker reached on an error by the third baseman on what should have been the final out of the inning.Woodward scored on the play, and Inglese followed with a bases-clearing double to left-center.

Michael Brooks had three hits, scored twice and had an RBI. Melker and Inglese each contributed a pair of hits and a double. Melker scored twice and had an RBI, while Inglese scored once and knocked in three runs.

Claremont 10, Etiwanda 6 (CHS record: 15-7, 8-5)

The Wolfpack junior varsity baseball team beat Etiwanda for the third time in as many games this year, sweeping the season series with the Eagles with a 10-6 victory Thursday at Etiwanda High School.

The junior varsity scored four runs in the second inning and added to the total in every inning but the fourth in improving to 15-7 overall and 8-5 in Baseline League play. Michael Brooks got things started with a one out walk and moved to third on Dylan Betancourt's single. Grant Melker was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Andrew Martinez walked to force in Michael Brooks, and James Brooks followed with a three-run double to give Claremont a 4-1 lead.

Etiwanda climbed to within 4-3 when Woody Cash doubled in the third inning and moved up a base on Michael Brooks' groundout. Jake Rangel singled him home. The Eagles clawed their way back again, scoring three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-5 lead. The score remained that way until the fifth, when Betancourt drew a two-out walk and stole second. Melker's bloop single drove in Betancourt. Melker stole second and Joey Inglese singled him in.

An RBI single by Cash knocked in Trent Woodward with a run in the sixth, and the Pack added two more in the seventh when Melker singles, Inglese and Martinez walked and Melker scored on a wild pitch. Woodward's ground out drove in the final run for Claremont.

Claremont 3, Alta Loma 1 (CHS record: 11-3, 4-1)

Claremont's junior varsity baseball team continued its mastery of the Baseline League with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over the visiting Braves of Alta Loma Monday.  Starting pitcher Jake Hellein allowed a run on two hits in the first inning, but then gave up just a single and a walk the rest of the way.  Hellein tossed a three-hit complete game, striking out seven hitters and was helped out by two nice plays at third by Michael Brooks.

Down 1-0 in the fourth inning, Jordan Moore led off with a double and Michael Brooks sacrificed him to third base.  But the pitcher threw the ball away, allowing Moore to score and Brooks to advance to second base.  Dylan Betancourt's bad-hop single scored Brooks for what would prove to be the game-winning RBI.  The Wolfpack added an insurance run in the fifth inning, as Andrew Martinez led off with a single and stole second base.  With two outs, Moore hit a slow roller to second that he would have beat the throw, but the ball rolled under the fielder's glove, allowing Martinez to score.

J Serra 10, Claremont 4 (scrimmage -- does not count in record)

The Wolfpack junior varsity and freshmen teams both played nine-inning scrimmages at J Serra High on Saturday, Feb. 23. While the scores might indicate otherwise, it was a successful day for both Wolfpack teams.

The JV team got off to a rocky start, as they were no-hit through seven innings.  However, with the score out of reach, the Wolfpack showed heart and responded well in the eighth inning.  With two outs, Shane Sumonsavadit and Jordan Moore singled.  Jack Heidelman crushed a 400-foot double to center field and Woody Cash followed with a two-run home run to account for all of their hits and runs.  Jake Hellein, Taylor Meyer, Mark Landgreen and Kent Noyes pitched well on the afternoon, with Hellein and Noyes allowing no runs and no walks in each of their two innings of work.
