Players of the Week

Claremont High School Baseball

Players of the Week

May 5-10, 2008

Varsity Player of the Week

Matt Anderson: 1-5, 2B, SF, 2 RBI...2 1/3 IP, H, 4 K

Anderson only had one hit this week, but it was a big one.  Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning of Wednesday's game against Los Osos, Anderson came to the plate with nobody out and Ryan Troli at first. The junior catcher crushed a fastball off Notre-Dame bound Dustin Ispas for a double in the left center gap.  His double scored Troli all the way from first base in the must-win game, and it proved to be the game winner.  Earlier in the week, in a 4-2 loss to Los Osos, Anderson had a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the first inning, but it was his relief pitching that kept Claremont in the game.  Not having pitched in a month, Anderson came on in the fourth inning with the bases loaded and two outs.  Anderson got the strikeout and went on to strike out the side in the fifth and retire the side in order in the sixth.  He allowed just one hit.

Varsity Pitcher of the Week

Kevin Bosson 1-0, CG, 2 R, 2 ER, 7 H, 15 K, BB...1 PO and 1 A

In a must-win game for the Wolfpack, senior ace Kevin Bosson took the ball...and delivered in a big way.  With a no-hitter already to his credit this season, Bosson gave his team another huge lift.  Bosson allowed seven hits and single runs in the third and fourth innings, but he was nearly flawless in the later innings, striking out seven of his career-high 15 hitters in the last three innings.  He had at least two strikeouts in each inning and struck out the side in order in the sixth.  Bosson allowed just one walk and struck out senior All-American Isaac Galloway twice.  He made two nice defensive plays, including covering first for the put out on the final play of the game against the speedy Arby Fields, and was involved in 17 of the 21 outs.

Junior Varsity Players of the Week

Joey Inglese:  3-5, 2B, 4 RBI, 3 R, .714 OBP

Freshman Players of the Week

Daniel Kessler: 1-0, 6 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 4K and 2-4, 3 R, 1 RBI, 3 BB, 1 HBP, 1 3B, .750 OBP

Ace pitcher Daniel Kessler got the call in the freshman team's final game of the season to determine the Baseline League champion. He delivered against Los Osos Friday, pitching six shutout innings and giving up just four hits while striking out four. He pitched to just two batters over the minimum, facing 20 players. At bat, he reached base on six of his eight plate appearances, going 2-4, walking three times and being hit by a pitch.

Sam Robinson
: 5-7, 5 R, 5 RBI, 2 2B, 1 BB, 1 SB, .750 OBP

Sam Robinson put "fives" on the board in the two games against Los Osos with five hits, five runs scored and five RBI. He doubled in each game and reached base safely in six of his eight plate appearances.

Grant Melker: 3-3, 3R, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 2B

Although he played just one game for the freshman team last week after playing two with the junior varsity team, Grant Melker was a sparkplug in the Wolfpack's big 13-0 win over the Grizzlies. He reached base all four times with three hits, including a check-swing double, and an intentional walk.

April 28-May 3, 2008

Varsity Player of the Week

Manny Argomaniz  2-5, SB, 2 SF, 2 RBI...4 A

Argomaniz had an impressive week at the plate for the Wolfpack.  The freshman hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to drive in Ryan Troli with the eventual game winning RBI in a 7-2 victory over Etiwanda on Tuesday.  Argomaniz followed that with another sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to plate Logan GrosJean with the game-winning RBI in a 3-2 must-win victory over Etiwanda on Thursday.

Varsity Pitcher of the Week

Anthony Cerafice:  1-0, CG, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 8 K, 4 BB...2 PO, 2 A

Kevin Bosson:  1-0, CG, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 6 K, 2 BB (1 IBB)...2 A

Cerafice and Bosson threw near identical games against Etiwanda to keep Claremont in the hunt for the final playoff berth heading into the last week of the season.  Cerafice tossed a three-hit complete game on Tuesday, allowing just one earned run as the senior overcame four errors by his defense.  He struck out eight batters, including All-American Ricky Oropesa, and he made several nice plays on defense.  Bosson hurled another gem on Thursday, surrendering one earned run on a four-hit complete game.  Bosson struck out six and walked just two batters, one intentionally.  He, too, made two nice defensive plays in the game.

Junior Varsity Players of the Week

Trent Woodward:   5-8  2B  3R  2 RBI  BB  OBP .667

Grant Melker:        4-4   2BB 1 HBP  5 R  2 RBI  OBP 1.000 (7-7)

Both Woodward and Melker had big bats for the Pack junior varsity. Woodward had five hits with a double, two RBI and scored three runs, while Melker completed his first full week on the JV squad after being promoted from the freshman team, going a perfect four-for-four and scoring five runs.

Freshman Players of the Week

Dustin Keller: 4-6, 3 BB, 3 R, SAC, 2 RBI

Landon Giammalva: 4-5, 2 SB, SAC, BB, R and 2 IP, 3 H, 1 SO, SAVE

Keller and Giammalva both went 4 for 6 this week, with each making big contributions against Etiwanda. Keller walked three times and scored three runs. Giammalva came in and pitched the last two innings against the Eagles on Tuesday to earn the save.

April 21-26, 2008

Varsity Player of the Week

Matt Anderson: 5-7, 2B, 3 R, 2 RBI...9 PO and 2 A

In a week of tough losses to Rancho Cucamonga, Anderson was a bright spot for the Wolfpack.  He went 2-3 in a 10-1 loss on Tuesday, and his 3-4, two-RBI performance on Thursday helped the Wolfpack jump out to a 9-0 lead.  His lone out on the day was a deep drive to centerfield that was caught at the wall.  Anderson was a force behind the plate, throwing out two runners on Tuesday and holding on to a David Kessler throw home as the runner came barreling into him.

Varsity Pitcher of the Week

Kevin Bosson:  5 1/3 IP, 10 H, 8 R, 4 ER, 5 K, 1 BB

Bosson was brilliant again, hurling three and two-thirds shutout innings to open the game before Rancho Cucamonga struck for two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.  This ran Bosson's consecutive scoreless inning streak to 20 2/3 innings, a streak that began several weeks ago against Rancho Cucamonga.  HIs streak is believed to be a school record.  Bosson ran into trouble in the sixth inning, an inning that began with a strikeout that got by catcher Matt Anderson, and left with the chance to still win it but ended with a no-decision.

Junior Varsity Players of the Week

Woody Cash4-8, .500, 8 RBI, 3 R, 3B, HR

Woody Cash had a huge day in Claremont's 13-4 victory over Rancho Cucamonga Tuesday, driving in six runs with three hits, including a triple and a solo home run. He came back Thursday with two more runs batted in and another hit.

Michael Brooks: 5-9, 2 RBI, 2 R, 3B

Michael Brooks went four-for-five against Rancho Cucamonga on Tuesday, and then 1-4 on Thursday.

Freshman Players of the Week

Daniel Kessler: 4-7, 3 BB, 2 R, HR, SF, 6 RBI... 7 IP, 1-0, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 9 K

Daniel Kessler started the week with a big three-hit day Tuesday against Rancho Cucamonga, going 3-4 with a home run and four runs batted in. He started on the mound that day and went four innings, allowing just one run and one hit to pick up his fourth victory of the year. He went 1-2 on Thursday. On Saturday against Alta Loma, he pitched a solid three innings, again giving up just one unearned run and one hit in a no-decision. At the plate, he had two more runs batted in.

Grant Melker: 5-8, 1 BB, 3 R, 2 2B, 1 RBI

Grant Melker went 1-3 in Tuesday's win over Rancho Cucamonga, and was then promoted to the junior varsity team. However, with a rare Saturday game on the schedule, he returned to the freshman squad and went 4-5 against Alta Loma, including a pair of doubles and two runs scored.

April 14-19, 2008

Varsity Player of the Week

Matt Sangsland: 1-6, 2 BB, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 SB....1 PO, 7 A

In Claremont's 2-1, nine-inning loss to Upland on Tuesday, third baseman Sangsland went hitless, but he made his presence known with his glove and arm.  He registered six assists and made several fine defensive plays.  One came on a slow roller in the fifth, and one came on a short-hopper that saw Sangsland drop to his knees before getting up and firing to first for the out.  But, it was his play with bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the eighth that got the Wolfpack out of trouble and gave them another opportunity to break the 1-1 tie.  On Thursday, Sangsland came to bat with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the first inning.  With the Pack struggling offensively of late, Sangsland's line drive single to right drove in what proved to be the winning run, and moments later he scored to provide an insurance run, as he jump-started Claremont's offense.  Sangsland later drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk, as he finished 1-2, two walks, two runs and two RBI, to go along with a stoeln base.

Varsity Pitcher of the Week

Kevin Bosson:  1-0, 7 IP, 0 H, 8 K, 1 BB....2 A

While senior Anthony Cerafice pitched a gem on Tuesday in a no-decision against Upland in his first league start, it was Kevin Bosson who stole the show this week.  Bosson hurled a no-hitter in a complete game shutout to give Upland its first league loss and move Claremont into sole possession of third place.  Bosson was electric from the very beginning, as he retired the first hitter of each inning.  Bosson struck out eight and allowed just one walk in facing three batters over the minimum.  He started 18/24 hitters with either an 0-1 or 1-2 count, and he retired the last 11 hitters he faced. He also extended his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 17.

Junior Varsity Player of the Week

Trent Woodward: 3-5, 2B, BB, 2 R

Trent Woodward had Claremont's only two hits in the team's 2-0 loss Thursday to Upland. On Tuesday against the Highlanders, he had a hit and scored twice.

Freshman Player of the Week

Sam Robinson: 5-6, 1 BB, 1 R, 2 RBI... 6 IP, 1-0, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 4 K ....3 PO, 5 A

Sam Robinson couldn't match the no-hit accomplishments of his cousin, Kevin Bosson, but he had a strong performance of his own on the mound and the plate Thursday against Upland. Robinson scattered seven hits and gave up four runs (three earned) while striking out four and walking just one in six-plus innings. He also had five assists on ground balls hit back to the mound. In addition, he went three-for-three at the plate with two RBI and scored a run on Thursday, following a two-for-three performance against the Highlanders on Tuesday.

April 7-12, 2008

Varsity Player of the Week

Greg Vogel:  5-9, 2B, BB, R and RBI...4 PO

With the Wolfpack suffering through an offensive shortage, Vogel's bat was one of a few bright spots over the four-day Darryl Kile Memorial Baseball Tournament.  Vogel's only RBI proved to be an insurance run in the Pack's only win.

Varsity Pitcher of the Week

Anthony Cerafice:  1-0, CG, 0 R, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB

With his team having lost its first two games in the Darryl Kile Memorial Tournament and struggling to score runs, Cerafice lifted the Wolfpack with a complete game, one-hit shutout.  He struck out two and did not walk a batter; in fact, no batter reached second base during the game.  Cerafice needed only 78 pitches for the complete game and was either 0-1 or 1-2 on 17 of the 22 batters he faced, just one over the minimum. He was named to the all-tournament team.

Note: There were no junior varsity or freshman games this week

March 31-April 5, 2008

Varsity Player of the Week

Ryan Troli: 3-8, 2 R, 2 RBI, SAC, 5 PO

Troli made the most of his first three league starts this week.  The junior outfielder had a hit and scored a run against Alta Loma, but his best two at-bats came later in the week.  Against Etiwanda, Troli lined a single up the middle in the bottom of the eighth inning to score Matt Sangsland with the game's only run.  Two days later, Troli worked a 3-2 count in the bottom of the sixth inning before walking with the bases loaded to force in the game-tying run and set the stage for Erick Cruz' game winning hit.

Varsity Pitcher of the Week

Kevin Bosson: 1-0, 8 IP, 0 R, 7 H, 7 K, 1 BB

Bosson tossed a complete game extra-inning shutout Tuesday against Etiwanda, striking out seven and issuing an intentional walk.  The senior worked in and out of trouble and started 20 out of the 26 hitters he faced with 0-1 and/or 1-2 counts.  Bosson's performance allowed the Wolfpack to squeak out a win in the bottom of the eighth and set the stage for a dramatic week of comebacks.

Junior Varsity Player of the Week

Jake Hellein: 1-0, 7 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 1 BB, 7 K

In a week where the JV team was suffering from key injuries and players being pulled up to the varsity, Jake Hellein stepped up to ease the transition.  The sophomore tossed a three-hit complete game, allowing just one earned run, as the JV squad downed Alta Loma on Monday.

Freshman Player of the Week

Sam Robinson: 4-9, R, 3 RBI and 1-0, 4 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 H, 2 BB

Robinson started on the mound against Covina Monday and went four shutout innings in the five-inning 12-0 victory, surrendering just one hit and helping his cause with two hits of his own. On Thursday, his two-out single in the bottom of the seventh drove in two runs to tie the score in a dramatic 7-6 come-from-behind win over Los Osos.
